A toolkit to support the design, implementation and scaling of dietary health policies that are most likely to work.

Working with Nesta, we designed and built a toolkit that evaluates the impact and cost of obesity-reduction initiatives. This allows the UK and devolved governments to identify which routes will reduce obesity most effectively by shifting emphasis to prevention and treatment options, and at the lowest cost to the taxpayer.

To make it easy to scan the interventions on the index page, we took a table-based approach.

We experimented with and user-tested different concepts to let users see ‘what works’, including the use of icons and other easily recognisable ‘score’ methods such as stars . We settled for a RAG traffic light system, using variations of red, amber and green that sit within or complement the Nesta palette. Extra contextual data is provided via a mouse-over.

On the individual intervention page, we reinforce the text-based metrics with the RAG colours.

The toolkit has been very well received and continues to sit at the centre of the policy landscape with regards to obesity reduction.
